NEWEST REGULATION CHANGES
South Atlantic, March 2010
Action: Federal interim rule for Red Snapper in the South Atlantic
Information: NOAA Fisheries Service published a final rule implementing interim measures to reduce overfishing of red snapper
in the South Atlantic. This interim rule closes federal waters to recreational and commercial harvest of red snapper effective January 4, 2010
to June 2, 2010 and could be extended for an additional 186 days. The FWC has not implemented a consistent closure of state waters in r
esponse to this interim action and at this time does not intend to consider whether to adopt consistent rules in state waters until federal
managers have implemented permanent rules replacing this interim action.
NEW SNAPPER—GROUPER REQUIREMENTS IN ATLANTIC
Additional regulation changes for vermilion snapper in State waters to match federal waters of the Atlantic took effect July 29, 2009. These regulations were developed by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and are intended to end over fishing of vermilion snapper. These additional changes:
Require persons fishing for snapper-grouper species (including vermilion snapper) to possess and use a dehooking device as needed to remove hooks from fish with minimal damage.
